Not all firearm dealers are created equal. At Cape Gun Works, we want you to really enjoy your new rifle, and that begins with knowing that it's legal to own in your area.
Massachusetts, in particular, has strict limitations on the features that owners can add to rifles and other firearms. That's why our online firearm shop includes a "Massachusetts Compliant" filter that you can use to shop with confidence.
What Rifles Are Legal in Massachusetts?
Long guns in Massachusetts that were manufactured before September 12, 1994 (the effective date of the Assault Weapons Ban) are entirely legal and MA-compliant.
For long guns manufactured after this date, the rules are a bit more complicated.
In short, semi-automatic rifles that are not specifically named in the Assault Weapons Ban are usually legal in Massachusetts.
However, they cannot have more than two of the "evil features" listed in the ban, such as flash hiders, bayonet mounts, and collapsible stocks.
In addition, the state imposes a 10-round limit on magazines that were manufactured after the ban.

- Semi-automatic rifles: A semi-automatic rifle automatically loads each round into the chamber but requires the shooter to press the trigger for each shot. These are highly common and sought after among firearms enthusiasts. While many states place restrictions on the sale and possession of certain semi-automatic rifles, lawful ownership is possible as long as it complies with the MA assault weapons ban or has a fixed magazine.
- Bolt-action rifles: Bolt-action rifles, especially ones by Remington, are especially popular among marksmen and hunters. These rifles are dependable and accurate, and they will last long enough for you to pass down to future generations. They get their name from the way they operate: like a door bolts shut, the mechanism in a bolt-action rifle slides into place in the breech.
- Lever-action rifles: Lever-action rifles use a manual cocking handle and a lever to feed cartridges into and out of the chamber. These are popular choices for recreational shooting and even home defense.
