If you're wondering what a Massachusetts-compliant shotgun is, you're not alone.
This is one of the questions people ask us at CGW. In short, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has strict restrictions on many firearms and accessories. Because these restrictions have been in place since 1994, manufacturers and FFL dealers like Cape Gun Works have more than three decades of experience in determining whether a shotgun is Massachusetts-compliant, and our online store offers convenient filters for your search. It is also important to note that Massachusetts has a limit of 5 rounds for semi-automatic shotgun magazines.
List of Compliant Shotgun Brands and Models

Because the concept of the shotgun goes back so long, there is also a slew of varieties available. The three most common styles of shotgun are:
- Pump-action shotguns are the most famous style of shotgun. These have a pump that slides across the magazine, letting you load the chambers and eject the spent shell. These are durable, versatile, and very easy to maintain.
- Break-action shotguns open at the breech. The barrels pivot on trunnions or a hinge pin, allowing you to drop ammunition into the chambers. Most of the time, they are double-barreled, but there are a lot of single-shot options out there as well. Break-action guns tend to be the most reliable but at the cost of reduced firepower.
- Semi-automatic shotguns fire a bullet each time you pull the trigger. They use the gun's own recoil or gas compression to eject the used shell and load the next one. This makes them especially popular among hunters and other outdoor shooters.
